The Things You Catch When You’re Walleye Fishing

If nothing else, walleye fishing makes for some interesting evenings. Most evenings include at least one or two northern pike and a handful of perch. The other evening when my son and I were fishing I managed to catch three bullheads in a row. If you’ve ever caught a bullhead, you know what an adventure that can be. They have jaws like and English Bulldog… fun for hook removal… and sharp spine on its pectoral fin.

So last night we ventured half an hour north to a lake that had a great bite earlier in the year. This is one of the four remaining lakes in our league, so we figured we would hit a few spots and see what we could find. My wife and I were both jigging a fathead in relatively shallow water and Junior had just hooked up a rig and a leech. As we passed a turn along the weed line he hooked into a nice fish. By the way the rod was twitching it looked like the tell-tale head shake of a northern. The thing fought hard and stripped off a few yards of line before he got it close to the boat. When he did reel it close, we could see that he had himself a Freshwater Drum… aka, a Sheephead. And, as has been his habit this year, it was a big one:

Not a world record by any means… but big.

We managed to find a couple of 15 inch walleyes later that evening, a far cry from the batch we caught a month earlier, but at least we had another spot on the lake to search when we pull it for league night.
