Quiet Week for the Walleye Derby

23 Inch Walleye

"TurtleRiverWalleyeGuy" - 23" Walleye - Gull Lake

Walleye fishing slowed a bit in my neck of the woods this weekend partially due to some unpleasant weather, and partially due to a few projects that needed to get done. TurtleRiverWalleyeGuy put in a few hours last week on the water and pulled the walleye you see to the left out of Gull Lake… one of a few in Minnesota. So he makes another move up the board hoping to to add a few more hogs and put some pressure on “Hang Loose” who, rumor has it, spent some time catching a few “eater” walleyes when he wasn’t working.

One more update to come this week and then a little break for the Fourth of July holiday. Everyone have a safe and relaxing holiday!

Walleye Fishing Line Giveaway

For those of you who have been following this blog, you know I have been doing a few product giveaways. If this is your first time visiting, then I would highly recommend that you look over to the left… just below the Walleyepalooza Leaderboard. Type your email in there and hit the “Subscribe” button. This simply sends you an update every time I add a post to this blog. That way, if you forget to check in, you will get a reminder every time I do a giveaway like this. No spam, no sales pitches… just a note that a new item has been posted. If you are on Facebook you might want to click on the Facebook icon over to the left as well and “Like” my page. That will add a note to your wall as well.

This week I decided to offer a lucky reader two 330 yard spools of Berkley Trilene Sensation mono. We made the switch to this line early in the season after a somewhat dissatisfying experience with another brand of fluorocarbon line. We’re pretty satisfied with this stuff so far and I would like to hear another angler’s opinion. Sensation is ultra strong and thin. Their highest strength-per-diameter mono, wet or dry. Super sensitive to detect light bites. Low memory for outstanding castability and handling. Maximum knot strength for more fish-fighting power.

If you are interested in two spools, just post a comment below indicating as much. I will select a winner at random sometime on Wednesday, July 6. I’ll post the name of the winner here, so check back in. If your name is posted as the winner, simply shoot me an email (walleyeguy “at” walleyeguyblog.com) with your address and the pound test you prefer. In return I would like the winner to provide me with a short review of the product. Winners must have a U.S. address to qualify. Good luck!

Walleye League Week 6

Turtle River Lake

Tuesday was an all-day soaker. The rain started over the weekend but Tuesday was just your basic pouring, all-day-long rain. Add to that a good brisk wind and the prospects for a pleasant evening of fishing were pretty grim. Regardless, I headed to Taber’s bait ready for whatever was to come. The word amongst the teams hanging out in front of the store was that the lake for the night would be Turtle River Lake, one of my favorites. Junior was running late, so I took the liberty of heading in for a couple of scoops of shiners assuming we would be pitching some jigs for the night.

Walleye Derby – More Massive Walleyes

"TurtleRiverWalleyeGuy" - 30" Walleye - Canada

The hogs just keep piling up as we enter the summer months of the walleye fishing season. I have to confess… when I started this I wasn’t sure if we could fairly compare the typical “big” walleyes from this part of the country to some of the giants that get pulled out of the Great Lakes on a regular basis. But after a little over a month of fishing I have observed some pretty amazing fish up close and personal and through submitted photos. There are some nice walleyes to be found in many lakes if you are willing to put in some time hunting for them.

This week we have a new competitor… “TurtleRiverWalleyeGuy” … who fishes some of the very same waters that I detail on this blog. His 30 inch walleye in the photo above was pulled out of Canadian waters and the 26.5 inch walleye was pulled from a Bemidji area lake. Nice work, and welcome to the Derby.

“Hang Loose” continues to grind out big fish with persistence and patience. He’s putting in his time in some of the ugliest conditions Northern Minnesota can dish out and is reaping the rewards. The 29.5 inch beast in the photo below was caught in the wind and rain pulling a 7 foot lindy rig with a crawler and single chartreuse bead in 15 feet of water on mid lake structure. Awesome fish.

2011 Walleye League Week 5

18 inch walleye big turtleAfter watching the finish of a couple of big weekends of fishing up here in the North country, we were ready to head out on Tuesday for some walleye action. With the weather threatening again, we rolled up to Taber’s Bait and learned that the lake for the night would be Big Turtle. I can’t say that I dislike the lake… it’s a beautiful lake with a great variety of fish species… but we have definitely struggled in the walleye department, whether on league night or any other night. Two blanks and a couple of mediocre finishes in the last four years. Let’s just say we knew we had a challenge.

Walleye Derby – Monster Week

monster walleyeWell, it was quite a week for walleye fishing up here in the North country this past week. The National Guard FLW Walleye tour hit a scorching hot Leech Lake with Kevin Carstensen taking home the championship with a three day total of 41 pounds 11 ounces. At the same time, the Kraus Anderson Walleye Classic was finishing up here on Lake Bemidji. There were some nice limits of fish, but the final teams to weigh had some absolute pigs. The fish to the left was a 29 inch beast (6.9 pounds) weighed by the second place team of Randy Topper and Brock Anderson (Brock is the brother of our current Derby leader “HangLoose”). Ryan and Shawn Klein won the event with a five fish basket weighing 17.66 pounds including a 6 pound pig of their own.

More to the point, we have some new photos for the Walleyepalooza walleye derby. “Hang Loose” keeps up his blistering pace with this beautiful 28.5 inch walleye pulled out of Lake Pokegama in Grand Rapids, MN:

Our friend Tyson from down south also adds two more walleyes to his limit with a couple of fish caught on Clearwater Lake near Emo Ontario:

2011 Walleye League Week 4

Although we’ve had some odd weather swings in the last week including a nasty wind that forced us to cancel league last week, Tuesday evening turned out to be a great evening for some fishing. We rolled in to Taber’s Bait to find that the lake for the night would be Wolf Lake, the very lake we fished last Wednesday night. Putting together a game plan for the evening was a pretty simple matter given the fact that we managed to find a walleye or two on every spot we hit last week using leeches on a lindy rig. Just for kicks we grabbed a scoop of shiner minnows as well, and this turned out to be a good move.

The Walleye Derby Gets A Little Hotter

As the temperature rises in the North Country, so too does the walleye action. We have entries from three competitors this week including two new entrants. Don’t forget, you can jump in any time between now and November when the rods get put away for rifles. Just check out the basic rules here and then shoot me an email (walleyeguy “at” walleyeguyblog.com) with some photos.

2011 Walleye League Week 3

While I would love to be reporting that the fish to the right was caught Tuesday evening during league, the fact is that wind gusts in the 40s and lake wind advisories forced us to scrap league for the evening. I can’t say that I’m too disappointed as the thought of my kidneys taking a pounding all night was not appealing. So everyone that showed up took seven points and went home safe and happy.

So we got our walleye fix last night when our buddy from Northern Border Outdoors met up with us at Taber’s Bait and we hauled our rigs out to a local lake for a little “show and tell”. We’ve dabbled around on this lake before with mixed results (mostly poor), so it was nice to go out with someone who actually knew the lake. The fact that he was willing to share one of his favorite spots tells you what kind of guy he is. We launched and headed out. The target was a nice flat covered with patches of cabbage and the occasional sand pocket… perfect territory for roaming walleyes. The goal was to move slowly across the flat working jigs and shiners in and out of the weeds looking to make contact. Junior was the first to hit with a nice little sub-13 inch fish. In fact, he was the only one in our boat getting action as we moved along the flat. The other boys we pulling out a mixed bag as we drifted along. There was no question that there were walleyes scattered on this flat.

We made our way to the south end with little action and headed back to where Junior tagged his first walleye. I started clicking with a few rock bass and once we hit the mark where we caught our first walleye I finally managed to score. In the flurry that followed the best fish boated was the 21 incher in the picture above. Between all the different species we caught we managed to run ourselves out of two scoops of shiners. The boys headed off and we followed shortly after.

A nice little lesson to keep in our back pockets for when we pull the lake some Tuesday night, and another great evening on a Northern Minnesota lake.
