2011 Walleye League Week 3

While I would love to be reporting that the fish to the right was caught Tuesday evening during league, the fact is that wind gusts in the 40s and lake wind advisories forced us to scrap league for the evening. I can’t say that I’m too disappointed as the thought of my kidneys taking a pounding all night was not appealing. So everyone that showed up took seven points and went home safe and happy.

So we got our walleye fix last night when our buddy from Northern Border Outdoors met up with us at Taber’s Bait and we hauled our rigs out to a local lake for a little “show and tell”. We’ve dabbled around on this lake before with mixed results (mostly poor), so it was nice to go out with someone who actually knew the lake. The fact that he was willing to share one of his favorite spots tells you what kind of guy he is. We launched and headed out. The target was a nice flat covered with patches of cabbage and the occasional sand pocket… perfect territory for roaming walleyes. The goal was to move slowly across the flat working jigs and shiners in and out of the weeds looking to make contact. Junior was the first to hit with a nice little sub-13 inch fish. In fact, he was the only one in our boat getting action as we moved along the flat. The other boys we pulling out a mixed bag as we drifted along. There was no question that there were walleyes scattered on this flat.

We made our way to the south end with little action and headed back to where Junior tagged his first walleye. I started clicking with a few rock bass and once we hit the mark where we caught our first walleye I finally managed to score. In the flurry that followed the best fish boated was the 21 incher in the picture above. Between all the different species we caught we managed to run ourselves out of two scoops of shiners. The boys headed off and we followed shortly after.

A nice little lesson to keep in our back pockets for when we pull the lake some Tuesday night, and another great evening on a Northern Minnesota lake.
